Curriculum for 2012-2013

Micah & Atarah are learning together for most subjects, just on slightly different levels of difficulty.  Here is a list of the subjects and resources we plan to use this year.  I am hoping we don't change too much as the year progresses.  I will add a separate list of books for the children to read independently for History, as well as pleasure, and books I read aloud to them.


Bible:  “Boy, Have I Got Problems!” by Kay Arthur & Janna Arndt.  A study of the book of James.
Scripture Memory Verses: taken from the Book of James.
Christian Heroes: Then & Now.  Missionary stories.  We will start with “George Muller: The Guardian of Bristol’s Orphans” by Janet & Geoff Benge.

Maths:  Mathsonlinehttp://www.mathsonline.com.au/  An Australian online Math curriculum.
Math Drill:  Practice Math facts on the iPad using the “Math Drills Lite” App.

Copywork:  “New American Cursive: Workbook 2”, Penmanship Program by Iris Hatfield.

Language Arts:  “Successful English 3A & 3B”.  Australian Homeschooling Series by Valerie Marett.  Workbook combining grammar, creative writing, poetry, comprehension.
“Revise Your Phonics 1”.  Australian Homeschooling Series by Valerie Marett.  Exercises to review phonics and rules.
Spelling practice on the iPad using the “Montessori Crosswords” App to reinforce the sounds  introduced in “Revise Your Phonics”.

Hebrew:  “Tiyulim - Journeys: A Hebrew Primer” by Torah Aura Productions.  This includes the Reader/Text plus the “Classroom Workbook” & “Home Workbook” to practice reading and writing.
“Hebrew in a Month” App on the iPad to increase and practice vocabulary.

World History:  “The Story of the World.  Volume 2: The Middle Ages” by Susan Vise Bauer. Plus the Volume 2 Activity Book to supplement the lessons with hands on activities and Map Drill.
   
Social Studies:  “Succeeding in Social Studies 4”.  Australian Homeschooling Series by Valerie Marett.  Geography of the Australian States and early explorers of the World.

Geography:  “Around the World in a Hundred Years” by Jean Fritz.  Stories of World Explorers.
Map Drill:  Included in Story of the World (Europe) & Social Studies (Australia).

Science:  Aha!Science  http://www.learning.com/ahascience/   Online Science Curriculum.  Interactive lessons with option to print worksheets and experiments.

Nature Study:  Christian Liberty Nature Readers

Typing:  BBC Typing Mat  http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/  Free online typing instruction.   And “Typing Tournament” App  available from the Mac App Store.

Composer/Orchestra Study:  “World’s Greatest Composers: Vol 1” from http://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/  We will start with an introduction to the orchestra followed by 8 composers to make a Composer Lapbook.
“The Story of the Orchestra” by Robert Levine.
“Stories of Great Muscians” by Kathrine Lois Scobey.  Ebook on the iPad.

Artist Study:  “World’s Greatest Artists: Vol 1” from http://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/  We will learn about 8 Artists, learn to recognise their work and experiment in art using their techniques to make our own masterpieces!

Art/Drawing:  Nature Study pictures and activities from Artist Study lessons.

Music:  Piano lesson from YouTube "freepianolessons4kids" and Recorder "Nine Note Recorder Method" by Penny Gardner.
